Nestled on the border of Northumberland and County Durham in the sleepy village of Blanchland, you’ll find The Lord Crewe Arms – a dog friendly pub/hotel that blends the luxuries of a hotel with the laidback comfort and cosiness of a proper British pub. The Lord Crewe Arms is a sister property to two lovely hotels local to us in The Cotswolds Calcot Manor and The Painswick – so our expectations were high and the village really does have a bit of a feeling of The Cotswolds about it.
It’s one of those places you arrive at and instantly feel calm and ready to relax by the fire with the dogs at your feet, especially with the warm welcome given to the dogs at reception (there is an enormous tin of dog treats to help yourself to at Reception!).
The hotel has 26 rooms located in both the main building and dotted in various buildings in the village a very short walk across from the main hotel. Up to two well behaved dogs aged 1 year or older are welcome in one of their 16 dog-friendly rooms. It's a fairly steep additional charge of £25 per dog per night, but this does include a cosy bed, bowl, towel and pretty much an unlimited supply of treats!
Rooms are in four categories: Cosy, Canny, Champion and Suites. We stayed in one of their 'Canny' rooms called Weardale which was located on the ground floor of the Angel building directly opposite the main entrance to the hotel. This was great as it gave us easy access outside with the dogs as well as a perfect people watching window looking out onto the central courtyard!
Our room had lots of character, with cosy blankets and even its own log burner, although it was a little too warm to light on the weekend we visited (we were tempted though). The room was a little on the small side, but perfectly good for a couple of nights with two dogs and a special mention must go to the incredibly comfortable bed – we slept very well!
As big foodies, the thing we were most excited for at the Lord Crewe Arms was definitely the food! We were able to take the dogs with us to both breakfast and dinner in the ground floor dining room which always makes life much easier. It's safe to say the food was absolutely delicious - the menu changes according to the season and everything was absolutely delicious. The theme continued at breakfast where we enjoyed a great hot breakfast (special mention to the 'no avocado toast' made with peas!) and the dogs even got their very own breakfast sausage.

Overall, we really loved our stay at the Lord Crewe Arms. They really do love dogs here and you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome, great food and comfortable rooms.
